KNOCKING AND OIL LEAK

I have a '95 buick le sabre
- there is an oil leak around the crankshaft on the pulley side
- no tappet knocking
- runs smooth until you put it into gear, then it knocks
could this possibly be a main bearing going? Any other suggestions? thanks!
