Key wont come out! Sign In

I have . a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was driving the other day, Everything was fine. Nothing sounded wrong. Get home, Key wont come out. And usually like every car you have to press the brake to pull it out of park. Now you can just slide the shifter back and forth with now brake being pressed down. Please tell me there is a cheap fix for this instead of taking it in

Being able to move the shifter in and out of park is more or less normal if the ignition switch is just in the off position.
This truck has an interlock cable and electric solenoid and they have two jobs. One is to prevent you from moving the shifter from park when the ignition is in the accessory or run position; without depressing the brake pedal. The other job is to prevent you from turning the ignition switch all the way back to the lock position if the shifter is not in park. Your system sounds like its stuck some where in between the two jobs?
The cable runs between the floor shifter and the steering column; the solenoid is connected between the cable & ignition lock. This cable may have broken, become disconnected or needs to be adjusted. The solenoid may have burnt out, brake light switch has gone bad, the fuse has burnt or there’s a wiring issue as in a broken wire.
You could check the 10amp fuse #25 in the fuse panel behind the right side kick panel.
That fuse is for the solenoid and brake light switch circuit. You could just have a look whether brake lights are working; if they are then the fuse is good.
From there you’ll have to remove the steering column covers and the shifter consol cover to see the ends of this cable and the solenoid.
That means you’ll have too or I should say you’re suppose too disable the air bag system. That’s so you do not accidentally light off the air bag; air bags come out of their module at about a 500 or better pounds worth of punch. You don’t want your face or any other part of your body in its way; when they deploy.
So I would suggest getting some reliable service information reading and understanding it; before you attempt this yourself.
