Lazer will not start Sign In

1990 Plymouth Lazer 140,000 miles 2.0 non-turbo engine. Car has been running great went to start it one day and just turned over wounldnt fire, no spark no fuel, checked 2 of the plugs dry. Installed a new multifunction relay next to the computer, still no change no spark and no fuel to the plugs any ideas ? I know the cam sensor also controls the spark and the fuel. Check engine light never did come on. Possibly computer ?? Just wondering if it could be something simple that Im missing ?? Any suggestions would be helpful Thank You !

Does the check engine light come on when you first turn the ignition on? Do you hear the fuel pump prime?

Do you have a digital volt meter?

Does the fuel pump prime when you first turn the key on? The fuel pump won't stay running unless the PCM is seeing a crank signal.

Re: Lazer will not start Sign In

Normally on Chrysler product the engine computer turns on the fuel pump which is part of the MPI relay for a couple of secs when you first turn the ignition on. If the engine computer doesn't see any rpm it will turn of the fuel pump.

If you trace the reason the fuel pump doesn't prime when you first turn the key on, it may lead you to the answer.

The next place to go is the MPI relay. You can put your fingers on it while someone turns the key on. It should click on and off. This is just to see if the engine computer is energizing the relays or not.

Yep, you got it. I forgot that this really is a Mitsubishi in disguise...

Re: Lazer will not start Sign In

Power to the ignition coil comes from the ignition switch on the black/white wire when the ignition switch is in the run or start position. The computer controls the coil's igniter to make sparks happen.

You can test for power on that wire.

You can go either way with your diagnosis really. You can find out why it doesn't have fuel pump activity or you can find out why it doesn't have spark. Either way you go, it should lead you to the culprit.

Re: Lazer will not start Sign In

well i havnt checked the power directly off the ignition switch black /white wire however the very first thing i did was to pull a plug and ground it to see if i had spark which their was none then i removed the coil pack and took it to a Napa dealer we bench checked it and it had a hugh spark. so I assumed it had to be a bad sensor possibly because it has to go through one of the sensors first in order to work multi function cam sensor etc. but you think i should check that black /white wire out of the ignition switch with the key on next ? or am i already past that point ?

Re: Lazer will not start Sign In

The coil may be good, but you still have the igniter, the wiring, the engine computer, power and grounds, and inputs to think about.

It may check good off the car but doesn't work on the car because your missing something to cause the coil to function.

You can systematically isolate each part of the ignition system by testing voltages with your volt meter to find out where the problem lies.

You have to understand the system to be able to diagnose it properly. That is a problem with doing it over the internet through a forum. You really need the wiring schematic and a brief description of how it works. I can tell you how it works, but you have to have some automotive electrical background or else this thread will be 10 pages long.
