Loud Engine Noises and Oil Leak Sign In

I'm younger and don't know too much about cars but I'll try to explain as best as I can. I have a 2000 Audi A4 V5 with 91,000 miles on it. I was driving home and all of a sudden my car started feeling weird. The engine became loud and sounded like it was working hard. I slowed down to about 20-23 mph, but the engine still sounded like it was working very hard. I'm also pretty sure that when I pressed the gas pedal the car didn't accelerated as fast as it did before. At the same time, the light for oil was turning on every few seconds (I think it's called the oil pressure indicator). I drove for about 3/4ths of a mile before coming home. When I opened the engine it looked like smoke was coming out, but I'm not 100% sure because it was dark. The next day, I saw that there was oil residue on the right side of where the oil goes. I turned the car on and pushed the gas pedal a few times, then I opened the oil cap and there was definitely some smoke coming out.

Re: Loud Engine Noises and Oil Leak Sign In

What is the oil level at? What was the engine temp at when this happened? Does this noise sound like a hammering of metal on metal? That light came on because the oil pressure dropped. You should've shut the engine off the moment the noise began and the light came on. Because ou continued to run the engine you have most likely blown the thing up and the noise you heard is a rod knocking because without oil pressure it chewed the bearings up like a rabid badger. I feel bad for you, as its an expensive lesson to learn. It is even more expensive because your car has parts that cost more and higher labor times than a domestic brand. Have someone knowledgable look it over but I'm pretty sure its curtains on that engine and time to rebuild. Next time you hear strange noises and warning lights come on you need to shut down the car that instant. Coast to a stop with the motor off.
