Mazda3 A/C question Sign In

Hi All,

I have a 2005 Mazda3, manual transmission, 2.3 engine, with about 78,000 miles on it. About a year ago, as I was driving on the freeway, I heard a loud screeching sound, followed by a puff of smoke from the engine, my A/C stopped working, and my check engine light came on. The mechanic I took it to said the whole A/C system needed to be replaced and removed the belt. I have subsequently spoken to another mechanic who seemed to think that maybe the compressor did not need to be replaced, but he did not look at the vehicle before giving me this diagnosis.

My question to you is: Is it possible, given the description of the events, there could be something other than the need to replace the compressor? I am being quoted $1100 for the overhaul. Can I avoid this expense?

Thank you.

Not only will it need a compressor but a dryer and possibly an expansion valve and condenser too.
