Melted Car Exterior Parts Sign In

Had my car parked outdoors in a city where the weather was in the low 100s. The plastic part that houses one of the side view mirrors was partially melted, along with a plastic moulding on one of the roof racks -- both parts were on one side. Is this possible?

Wow! For the most part NO. If the parts are dark or black and the car sat all day or at least a long time with little or no shade and no breeze it's possible. Been a long time but I've been in some high altitude strong sun that made a car so hot you really could have cooked in it. I have had a windshield break before in the heat,

A couple of people who saw it could only guess that the reflection from the sun may have bounced off of something elsse to cause such intense heat. Odd that it only happened on one side.

You did say a "city" and more and more buildings are mirror glass an I think you can double the intensity of the sun. I don't think this is common but It probably was not some kind of vandalism.

Sorry that happened to you but it is interesting that it can. Haven't heard that even from folks/friends in Las Vegas, Tucson, and Phoenix where sun is intense.

I've also witnessed the other extreme of cold and was in actual -45F (air temp NOT windchill) and plastics didn't like that either - would get brittle like glass,
