Mercedes has fuel but won't start Sign In

1991 Mercedes 300TE base model, 130K
Ever since this vehicle ran out of gas about 6 months ago (don't ask) it started experiencing this problem. Last week while driving the reserve light flickered, made a sharp turn and it conked out. Put 5 gal. of gas in it but it wouldn't start. Had it towed home. Replaced the fuel filter and it started. Drove to work and back for 2 days, only a couple miles round trip. With the fuel gauge showing over a 1/2 tank, I drove it the other night for about 3 miles and it conked out. Did not want start. Had it towed home again. Replaced both fuel pumps. It tried to start but didn't. Now it just cranks over until the battery starts to die. Would running out of gas cause the ignition system to begin to fail? Does it suddenly lose compression and not run? Could something else cause it to not get fuel? I was just starting to make headway with the power steering. ?!?!?!

Quote you ">>Now it just cranks over until the battery starts to die. Would running out of gas cause the ignition system to begin to fail?<<"
Greeting sport. It's an old car now and was long ago just means you need to be up to date with everything and have done so all along. That comment alone you are just cranking it till battery is stressed out you are harming this thing both starter and the battery, lower plain power to crank it up and everything is involved.

Begin from the basics: Well charged and know good battery that can crank the engine at a normal speed. If not starting don't kill it like you are go back till you knock that problem off or it's going nowhere.

Too much now could be flooded so yes you've involved ignition just can't spark thru soaked plugs is NOT usually an ignition problem rather maybe wet plugs now.

Just basics first fuel should now be fine now it isn't sparking it for low power thru probably fuel soaked plugs I'd start with doing some checks. Keep battery up with a charger and don't just crank the heck out of it that's just causing more problems.
This is an open book of possible problems that were lurking I'll try to add the link to here for "All Crank No Start" is the process to follow.

When will people learn

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas or very low, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off.
You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this

Said new doesn't mean they are good have to agree with HT.
Point: There aren't any pumps that unless self lubricated like for a compressor for air that don't want liquid for what they do - none. Just never let that happen on a Benz no less doubt they are cheap if they were you got junk so do check,
