Hello, we woke up this morning getting ready to go to school. (I'm 15). Any Way when we went outside my mom started up her car. All of a sudden we smelled oil. I figured if there was an oil leak, I would see it on the ground under the oil pan. When I went to check just as I thought, there was a substance on the ground. It was frozen and black. It's so cold where I live, that's why it was frozen. I Told my mom to pop the hood so I can check if the oil is low. It didnt seem low. I'm thinking that maybe a gasket is loose ? It is a 2010 equinox. My question: is this oil ? If not what can it be ?

Oil gets thick at lower temps but won't freeze. Oil starts off as a clean tannish gold color but eventually turns black as it breaks down. Transmission fluid is red. Antifreeze is normally green, yellow, or orange. Power Steering Fluid is clear, transparent tan, or red if one used tranny fluid. Brake fluid is usually clear or kind of a transparent grayish purple. Gear oil is usually a transparent tan. As HT suggested it needs to be up on a lift where it can be inspected. It's obvious it's leaking something. Maybe talk to your auto mechanic teacher at the high school and see if they can throw it on their lift for inspection. When I was in high school there were people in our community who would bring their vehicles in for us to look at. You should sign up for auto mech next year. I took every class my high school offered and am glad I did. I'm not a professional mechanic but I can't even guess how much money I've saved over the years working on my own vehicles. If anything it will teach you the basics of maintaining a vehicle. The reason most vehicles breakdown is because people don't follow the recommended maintenance intervals and don't even check their fluids. A lot of times is because they have no idea how. Or, they know something isn't right with their vehicle and they continue driving it until it no longer starts. Doing that ends up causing more damage. I heard one of the mechanics on this site once say that it should be mandatory to learn proper maintenance before ever being allowed to get driver's license. Trust me when I say to take a class or two. One day you'll be glad you did.
