post locked   My car wants to die when i come to a stop

The car i have is a 2004 chevy malibu which has around 300,000 on it, it dont run too bad as long as i dont give it too much gas while im driving, if i give it a lot of gas while im driving and i come to a stop it wants to die ( i normally have to press the accelorator when im stopped. At any rate for the most part if i accelerate a lot if dies when im stopped but if i just barely give it the gas while driving it normally wont die but it still has it times that it will die no matter how much gas i give. I thought the plugs might have been fouling out with fuel so i changed the plugs and it still want to do just not as bad. It looks like it has fuel injectore and i dont know anything about that so i could use some help & thank you in advance.

Sounds like you have 2 different issues. Poor idle speed and hesitation on acceleration.

With that many miles I'm sure most everything is worn out.

For the hesitation
Make sure there are no tears or holes in the intake snorkel. Buy some Mass Air flow cleaner and spray the wire inside of the MAF sensor

For the bad idle

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system (very important)

. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Ditto. 300,000 miles, 19 years +/- takes its toll.

Plastic intake parts as Hammer Time mentioned high on the list IMO after a harder run motor mounts may move more and a defect/split in plastic intake parts is letting unmetered air in (the leaks intake or vacuum) holding parts keep leaking for a while somehow seal just enough if not beat on?

300,000 miles is enough takes ridiculous care over the years for things to last that long,

This is in response to an answer, the car starts perfectly and when it dies it is very unpredictable, it has no hesitation when i go to pullout or when i speed up, right after i changed the plugs i took it for a drive in which i made several stops and it only died once, its dieing is very inconsistant. When i come to a stop it will idle between 600 & 900 rpm
but when it does do its job it will sora of fluctuate. The plugs i pulled out the little exectrode in the middle was almost worn down so i know i got the plugs fixed. I hope this helps.

OK, so ignore the hesitation advice and follow the idle problem advice.

With the mileage you have the throttle body could be so worn out that the idle will never stabilize.

On just about the maf and there is no smoke that i can tell & when i 1st start it idles just fine, the only thing that is wrong is when i dies, i accelerate very slowly and for the most part it does fine.

Quote you "> The plugs i pulled out the little exectrode in the middle was almost worn down<"

That's either wrong or cheap plugs or OMG been in there way too long miles/use wise.

Spark will want to stray under loads more than idle. Now anything that carries high voltage for spark could be harmed??

Keep at it I said before you just can't do those miles without almost insane over care for all things, oil changes more often miles + time.

If neglected other things happen most engines would do that many miles without the care along the way.

Now I also suspect exhaust is restricted worse when hot under loads of accelerating hard would be weak or fool other controls and stall out till cold again - it does that.

Stinks - gotta check everything to do with it.

IDK, compression test is probably in order and live watching assorted things that could do this IS A LOT OF STUFF.

History of care on cars with that much use prior owners frequently have a record of what was done when, how often or what disasters came before you like a whole used engine or what.

First thing Hammer said it's the whole car to check out perhaps just get some pro advice on the thing to do tests ask up front how much and limit the time and cost only if you are going to do something.

There are limits to how long things last that move this is pushing it,

I do know that i have never seen plugs with that little electrode worn like that, unfortunately i inherited the car in that shape, i do know that my step son got it from his dad & he was fairly good at taking care of the car but his son was not and since the dad is dead now im stuck with figuring things on my own & its been a long time since i worked on a car.

Something was good about it as it's still here. Some center electrodes are a pin tiny, made of a metal that doesn't change or burn at all no matter what others do are usually the wrong ones and cheaper.

So you have some history is why it's here at all.

Trouble is despite high demand for OK used cars are still costly have worn out stuff - interiors beat so bad just the time sitting in a seat you wreck the seat or put up with it.

Electrical, high voltage does some wear just working making a jump of spark can transfer metal from one electrode to the other.

Anywhere electricity chooses path of least resistance heat matters too so what else could it jump from or to you don't see?

Then while running improperly did it harm cat-converter? Exhaust restriction super lowers power if bad enough. Did it melt inside it?

Gas engines 2004 have long since had codes that would set even if light isn't on it should with key in just "run" position without running is a bulb check. Look for the icon lit up.

Already said all needs a check takes scanners, tools + experience to find what is bad or likely is why a pro checking it in person beats the web forums - of course.

Ask how much? Per hour or if a pro would at all? The new plugs made some difference so now thinking spark involved already said keep driving it what else was harmed?

Last for now just about spark. When you ask for power it's harder to fire that mix of fuel/air than without load - just take my word it is.

May not be this at all it needs to be ruled out on to the next something that would do this,

Your advise did the trick, i have started trying to get it to die & it wont so thank you. It runs so much better, idle may be a little high but thats it.

The computer should relearn the correct idle speed after a little driving.

What did you try that made a change? If trying by pot luck do one thing at a time, use it then another or you don't know which if 2,3 or more things all at once.

If you knew which trick did what then which item or thing did you do?

Idling high should adjust itself just driving it many times if fixed somehow it's learning where to be always within a range some stall out all the time some high idle,

Sorry for another post. Back to post #6 you said "never saw plugs with that little electrode?"

Did you put in EXACTLY what the car/engine calls for best by OE brand IMO.

The outlets sell stuff (lies) that lie IMO. More power, lots better MPG bull. The carmaker went nuts to choose what works best or would have done it new.

Fine to play but quit it after about 1972 models of anything with total alterations on purpose,

Tom
