My new Explorer died. Compression issues?

My new Explorer died. Compression issues?

I bought a 2000 Explorer XLS 4.0 today. It died before I made it home. It was slow to accelerate at first, and ran and idled a little rough. I've owned nothing but sports cars my whole life and assumed the slow acceleration was normal for a larger vehicle, and didn't think much of the rough idle/run on a 17 year old vehicle. I'm not mechanically inclined. I drove directly to work from the dealer. Upon leaving work I noticed a consistent tick/click/knock in the engine while both idling and driving. At the same time the ticking began, the car started accelerating much faster. Still not as fast as my G6 but much faster than it was upon leaving the dealer. I picked up my daughter from karate and noticed a little bit of exhaust or smoke or possibly vapor coming from the hood. The smell of exhaust was pretty strong in the cabin at this point. I pulled over to investigate. Oil and coolant are full, smoke/exhaust seem to be coming from somewhere to the bottom-right of the engine. Temp gauge was normal. Smoke subsided after a few minutes and I pulled back onto the highway to go home. While going up an overpass the engine completely died, power steering went out. I made it over the overpass and managed to barely make it into a mall parking lot (with much difficulty steering). Lights, radio and electrical components still working. Turned the car off for a while and tried restarting it. it cranks but doesn't turn over. Had to leave it and get a ride home. I've read that exhaust leaks are pretty common on this model, but from everything I've read it should't cause the entire car to die while driving and then not turn back on, would it? What could this be? Is it reasonably fixable? The car was bought as-is, no warranty from the dealer.

Take a good look, you said PS went out to a leak and drove it. Burning oil off of hot exhaust does smell a lot like exhaust. "Low Power?" Don't blame anything yet on that and may not be true yet. It's not a larger vehicle IMO! It's a six cylinder engine but vehicle does weigh enough. Problem with PS may be most or all of the issues so tend to that and hope driving it didn't cause more problems, T

? OP stated it was sold "as is" so any issues may be out of dealer responsibility? Seems a little early yet with this thing and still think ps failed and made a colossal mess. Bet belt isn't even on it right now - who knows? T

The thing died on the way home. I'd be tearing that dealer up until he did something about it. So would I but also if known "as is" wouldn't buy it without some wild checking out first + may still just know why it's marked "as is" from a dealer the problems were known no doubt. All that is fine just say so not just let someone take off with it, T

IDK - Sounds like Its YOUR vehicle now. You need to have a professional technician look at this. A little late but should have been done BEFORE purchase. Owning Nothing but sports cars and a Pontiac G6 are somewhat confusing. Car troubles smoke engine dies - first place you go is always the mall ?

I am a dealer Rep in Florida and here most everything is sold "as is" but there is no way I would get away with unloading something like that. It's completely dead now. Won't even start. The entire engine died while I was driving, not just the PS. Just noting that coasting off the highway and around the corner to a safe place was difficult without power steering.

It's pretty obvious that you didn't do you "Due Diligence" about this dealer BEFORE dealing with him. Legally, you probably don't have much of a leg to stand on because he probably had you sign all the right paperwork. You can probably get him in a little trouble for using someone else's insurance info to obtain a temp tag. I hope you didn't sign an affidavit saying it was your insurance. Your best hope is appealing to this guy's sense of responsibility if he even has any. The comment "always the mall" back a few just a comment as that what you said. Hey - thing is in clear trouble - at least check if there's a belt on it and pulley's turn at all especially PS. If any are locked up nothing on that belt is going to work. It's dead now no doubt battery has no charge can't if not belt or totally oiled up and you are still messing with it! It is a sad deal. Should have said up front it was in great need of whatever and selling with known problems but "as is" in 49 states is enough. Said just that as it's illegal to use that in MA as a disclaimer you must state "WITH DEFECTS KNOWN" instead - same thing. Sorry for your problems with it and agree a raw deal but you are making it worse and can't see how you don't own this mess now so find out what it's going to take to be able to use it at all or maybe dump it and cut your losses, T

This one Chevy Store I worked at back in the 90's They sold this lady a used car, AS IS(most of the cars were sold with a warranty ,but they also had some that were sold AS IS AND SHOWN) Well, she had a problem with it and came in to the dealer, Used car manager felt sorry for her and had us repair it as a onetime goodwill gesture Fast forward , month goes by, has another problem, he told her sorry , it is AS IS She sued and the judge told the Manager/ Dealer principal, that the AS IS Agreement was broken once he did the onetime goodwill so that was no longer in force and ordered him to repair the car So , He learned from that and told us that even tho he wants to have a heart and help out, he can't
