New alternator noise

Last week the alternator on my '97 Lumina died, so I had it towed to the mechanic, where they replaced it. But I noticed that with the new one, there's a whining noise coming from it, which changes in pitch with engine RPM. Is this normal for a new alternator, like a "breaking in" sort of thing, or is something wrong?

Not normal and no break-in period. The alt itself, a pulley, belt could be the source of the noise. Stuff happens even when new parts are used. If it wasn't there before it's reasonable to suspect the alternator for now, T
