No start, no crank....SOLVED. why?

No start, no crank....SOLVED. why?

Yesterday I had a no start, no crank on my 2004 toyota sienna with 265k miles. I had dash lights on inside, but the headlights would not come on.
I tried a jump start and nothing happened, no crank, not even a click really.
I went to the battery, cleaned the terminals really well with a wire brush.
Went to get my multimeter, multimeter was dead of course. Fixed that and then went to the car battery.
7.6 volts on the battery. Not good. Tested the voltage drop to the terminal, 0. Since the batter was already 4.5 years old, I replaced it.
New battery is in, car cranks fine.
Question now: why did the jump start not work in this scenario? Was the battery shorted?

That's entirely possible. If a battery is too far gone it will not let enough voltage through it to jump start.
