Noise around the rear axle Sign In

Hi i have a 2004 tj wrangler and i have this noise, its kinda like a slipping, thats what it feels like anyway when i start to accelerate but it doesn't do it all the time, i had a look at the seal on the input to the diff housing and it appears to may have a leak which is an issue but i am still unsure what the noise could be and there is some play in the wheel bearing.

Re: Noise around the rear axle Sign In

If this is leaking oil for differential there's no telling what level it's at and if way too low what damage or parts have worn out now. I think Wrangler still used a one unit rear axle/differential so oil at the front input seal would also be involved in other bearings plus gears and the whole show.

IDK - tend to find out about that and how low first and diagnose from there. Things worn from and if low on gear oil are not going to heal just by filling it and fixing the leak,

Scan for codes even if light is off. Post ALL the codes
The jeep is stock? Give us some history additional info etc.
other than the oil what makes you suspect the rear diff?
