2001FordF250 Super Duty 4X4
7.3L272k
I have a 2001 Ford F250 Powerstroke 4X4, that is making a noise that seems to be coming from the front left wheel. I've replaced the brake pads thinking maybe they were worn, which the were, but that didn't solve the problem. Next step was lock the hubs, it had the auto/lock hubs on it from the factory, which made the noise go away. I suspected a vacuum leak might have been trying to engage the left hub, which seems to maybe be the case. So I replaced the auto/lock hubs with warn 1/4 turn manual hubs but am still getting the same noise when the hubs aren't locked. I rebuilt the front end about 25 to 30k ago, so I really don't think it's a wheel bearing, as the noise is intermittent.

IDK for the moment just the miles, alterations what comes to mind. YOU thought brakes (worn) and found pads worn - how about the caliper and how thin is the rotor I just know you didn't replace it or measure did you?
At some point calipers wear, even hard metal they can rattle but should quit if you "drag" them slightly when making the noise. If it changed it that job isn't done yet so noise could be two things and hair pulling more to find and fix,

Yeah the rotors were turned 20 or 30K ago. Had a wheel bearing go out, and ended up rebuilding the entire front end. New calipers, new tie rods and ends and new brake pads at that time. What's weirding me out, is that the noise doesn't come up if the hubs are locked.

One more as I don't think I can help too much too HD for my background. How about just shake the shaft to that wheel and see if there's "lash" (free-play) of something in excess vs other side?
Seems you've done a lot been there a lot I just say last to watch out for noises you'd swear were one side end up the OTHER side dang noises, vibrations just travel and isn't that side at all. Good luck there's new hubs and things not OE adds to the "maybe" list too. BTW you know it said new calipers almost all heavy stuff and those hubs would be redone but should say so or super popular stuff cloned I doubt this truck??

Yeah the calipers were probably refurbs, and the brake pads were more worn on the inside, both left and right. I have a video, but the motor kinda drowns it out.

Just RE: the wear inside only. If "floating" calipers that's from pins or slides (I'll never guess on a HD thing what types) were not lubed enough actually have to check that crap if wheels off look and if time lift up calipers do the lube again. Did that cause the noise - doubt it just that can and should be avoided HD takes a beating already got a lot of miles on this things can smell it works hard! Tom
