Overheated battery

Just installed a new battery in my gf '02 Accent last week. On her way home tonight she smelled a rotten egg smell coming from the car. Popped the hood and fluids were spitting from the battery and it was hot. Let it cool and checked the amps. 13.4 with the engine off and 17.4 with it running. Is the altenator overcharging all of a sudden or is there a fault somewhere.? Is the new battery the cause?

The battery is definitely being overcharged. You should get the charging system tested, chances are you will need to replace the alternator, you may have cooked the battery also.
