I've been having a reoccurring issue with my 2004 monte carlo ss 3.8L. My engine is not running at the right temperature or so it appears the gauge will slowly rise and if you are driving for long periods of time it will generally operate at around 230 but if you stop or idle the temp will either rise or fall completely randomly, the coolant temp sensor has been replaced, along with the thermostat , the radiator has been flushed.(its not burning coolant or having any issue starting) I brought it to the mechanic and they ran a block test and test drive and said it could be the start of head gasket problem but had no other ideas, If Any chevy owners or monte carlo owners have experienced this and found either the issue or fix let me know.

Temp gauge in car is just not 100% but should be the general idea. Cooling system must be known full, radiator and engine and stay that way. Hard to know on some that don't use a radiator/pressure cap on radiator and some are very fussy to get full with any service to cooling system.

Your mechanic did the block test and even if not demonstrating anything more and temps show within normal he's probably right.

BTW - the sensor if you replaced it called CTS "coolant temp sensor" isn't for the gauge on dash TMK but rather for engine's computer to know how warm it its,

Sounds like you may have some air in the system.
