Overheating issue

I have an issue with my car overheating that started last night. On my way to work last night I had driven approx. 10-15 miles when the temperature gauge quickly climbed to nearly the red line. I was able to pull off and shut it down just as the needle reached "H"and I had to let it sit until this morning. While trying to get it home the same problem happened but I shut it down well before it reached "H" again although I had to do this 2 or 3 times to drive the 10-15 miles to home. I checked the coolant level this morning but it was only slightly low. As far as I can tell the engine itself seems to be ok. This morning I didn't see any smoke from the exhaust but the heater no longer works....it started blowing cold air last night at about the same time it started overheating. Here is some basic info about the car: 2002 Mazda 626, 2.0L, 180,000 (approx). Also the head gasket was replaced about 9 months ago. If anyone could offer some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

The heater started blowing cold because it was full of air and not coolant. You need to have the system pressure tested for leaks and I think you are going to find some. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I might agree with testing for freezing point but this isn't a thermostat problem.

I've had some time to look at it more closely and I noticed that water is coming from the overflow reservoir. The reservoir cap has 2 hoses connected to it; one runs to the radiator and the other hose is about 4 inches long but is not connected to anything. I started the engine after it had been setting for about 4 hours and as the engine got warmer, the second hose on the reservoir had water coming out. It was alternating between a steady drip and a trickle

You need to stop running this engine before you end up having to buy one. Get it pressure tested. Have it towed to the shop if necessary.
