I have a 1996 cavalier with 175,000 miles recently it would crank but not start. I assessed that their was no spark from any of the plug wires, the battery was fully charged. I changed the coil packs and ignition module with a used one and also the Crankshaft position sensor. I plugged my scanner in to the port but it would not link up with the vehicle. I checked all the fuses especially the cigarette lighter fuse because this one was blown one time and it would detect the pcm either. I think the pcm may be bad. at this point I had it towed to a garage to find out. but in the future is their anyway I can check to be more certain(didnt want to replace something else that may not b the problem)? thanks

That means the computer is not even powering up. I ended up towing the car to my local repair shop i use when I am unable to fix something or dont the the equipment to do so. they determined the PCM was bad and blew due to frayed wires on the harness, they replaced the Pcm and fixed the wires(I didnot feel comfortable messing with the PCM) they called me telling me none of the warning lights on the dash will now go off. they sent it to an authorized GM dealership to reprogram the PCM but the problem still exists. any suggestions as to the issue?? thanks

after talking to the dealership. they tried another pcm and had that one "reflashed" or reprogrammed. the dash warning lights still remain on. they have no idea why. they state its not in the pcm at all. bottom line it is an older car and I dont want to pay alot of $ to have them try to find the problem. I am going to drive it as is and in the very near future get another car. I would like to see if I can find the problem like is it a short in the wiring? and any idea where I should start? thank you

Were the lights on before they changed the PCM? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

they did say that the cause for the pcm failing in the first place was that the wiring harness was frayed and arcing.

The lights were not on before and now they repaired the harness and changed the computer and all the lights are on. It needs to go right back to them to resolve the issue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

yes that was my thought also but they are telling me they took it to a GM dealership and they dont know why either and it could cost me several hours in labor to find the issue and may never find it. to me, the car is old with high miles and not worth that kind of money but a small part feels like they should solve the issue at their expense being the problem didnt exhist until the pcm was replaced thank you for your time

kinda got same opinion or that they dont want to be bothered, they know i do most of my own work and only bring something to them that i am either not comfortable fixing or just dont have the means to reasonably do so. I am not a "regular" there even though my last 4 vehicles i purchased from them thank you for your opinions and time!
