how do you remove the parking brake lever in a 1986 gmc pickup so that the parking brake switch can be replaced

Re: Parking brake switch Sign In

Good question. Just looked at a 97 and out in the rain so didn't go nuts but saw that the plate is bolted to kick panel. Are you sure you need to move it to replace the switch? In near 40 years never had to do one. Pretty sure whole assemble will just move to side and give you access and may need to push the lever to see hidden bolts. Don't undo it with tension on it and if need be undo the connector cable on underside,

Thanks Tom. I'm not sure if the parking brake moves to the side on my truck. It looks like there is a bolt that can be loosened. The switch that needs to be replaced is behind(top of) the parking brake.

Re: Parking brake switch Sign In

Hopefully one of the regulars here will know or better yet have a good diagram. In the mean time just have parking brake in perfect order and set it hard so there's no mistaking it being on and wreck your rear brakes which it is using thru cables instead of hydraulics lines.

I'll try to look at my own again when not raining and on my butt with the door open - laugh,
