Purpose of brake shims?

What is the purpose of the adhesive backed brake shims which come with new pads? For the first time, I had one become un-glued, slipped and started rubbing against the edge of the rotor. No big deal except for the noise, but I'd like to know what they are supposed to do.

They help to prevent squealing. All the better pads have them. You can use a little glue to hold them in place if the tabs are broken off or you can buy them separately to replace them if necessary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
