Question regarding dry lifter Sign In

I have a 2003 Alero. A rocker arm bolt had to be repaired. It was stripped and the head pulled off. After the garage finished the repairs, the engine is making a ticking sound. The garage said a lifter needed to re-lubricate itself, so I was to ignore the ticking and keep driving the car. That was three weeks ago. I called the garage today about the tick, and they said that the sound may never go away and to continue driving the car.
Is a dry lifter really a non-issue? If I continue driving the car, do I risk damaging the engine?

If a hydraulic lifter isn't pumping up, it isn't taking the play out in the valve train that occurs from wear and tear. Other than the irritating noise, the valve may not open fully causing unsteady manifold vacuum and/or it will beat the valve train and cam lobe to death. There is also the possibility that the collapsed lifter could have a blocked oil feed. If the feed is blocked there won't be any oil flowing up the push rod that lubricates the push rod ends and rocker. You really need to have that fixed.
