Replacing brake drum

While changing the brake shoes on a 1998 CR-V I just purchased, I noticed a fine scratch around the inside of one of the drums. I've asked some people about turning it, but with the lift and maintenance costs, it's about the same as buying a new one. The maintenance history of this car is unknown at this time. Is it safe to only replace one drum at a time, or should I swap them both out? Thanks, Mike

OK -- If you want to cheat on this car just throw in the new shoes and forget it. Shoes will mate to the imperfections of the drum. But STOP -- if the drum is too worn this is unsafe and don't do that.......... They are best done in pairs and with new shoes they will match the arc of the new shoe much better than even turning the old drum. Back brakes do NOT do most of the work but are still very important for brake feel and overall stopping power, T
