Hi there I just bought a 2005 Corolla Verso 1.8 VVT-i with 140.000 km on it. Nice car, but it has an engine issue - or I think it has. When I change gear the rpm hangs up for a second or two - almost like it draws in fake air from a leak in the intake. I don´t know if this is normal, but I doubt it. I get one trouble code, that pops up sometimes "catalyst efficiency below theshold" When the engine are not running and I push the throttle and let go quickly it sounds like the throttle body close immediately, but I don´t know how it reacts when the engine are running, it has the electric throttle body. I have changed spark plugs, air filter, cleaned the throttle body, cleaned engine with Bell Add service cleaner and a fuel additive to clean the injectors. I have also tried to block off different vakuum hoses, to check for leaks. But nothing helps, it still sounds like I don´t let go of the throttle when I change gear, it rises shortly in rpm before the rpm goes down again. Where should I start looking? Lambda sensors, mass air meter, throttle body, maybe a cracked intake manifold (it is plastic) or where should I start? Cheers Christian Denmark.

We don't have that model Corolla here in the states. Something to look into is to see if there are any software updates for the engine controller. Check with the dealer or a shop that has flash programming capabilities to see if the engine controller has the latest calibration installed. Sometimes software bugs are causes of problems like the one your expiriencing. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
