I have a 2007 Saturn Ion with automatic transmission. It makes a loud rattling sound when I drive in first and second gear. The rattle disappears when it shifts to third or higher gears. The rattle usually doesn't occur when I accelerate from a stopped position. It mainly occurs after an automatic downshift to first or second gear, such as after driving on the highway and slowing down to make a turn onto a side road. I've been driving 40 years and have never had this problem. What could cause this rattle in the lower gears, and mainly after automatic downshifts?

A possibility that's fairly common is heat shields rattle as spot welds that hold them tight give out. You can feel them (cold engine) and or tap on exhaust parts may reproduce a noise - engine off even. A maybe to check and rule out for now, T
