Secondary Air Pump Problem

My sister has a 2000 VW Cabrio. After the check engine light came on, she took it to a dealer who informed her that the secondary air pump needs to be replaced (to the tune of about $900). After reading many posts on many boards, I still cannot get a definitive answer to my question. Is she risking damage to the catalytic converter or any other system if she continues to drive the car without having the repair? I'm a first-time poster here and would appreciate any information you guys can offer. Thanks.

I don't know that car but I my problem at that price I'd go used. Some will even install what they sell. YES a failed air pump can stress out you convert(s) and cause a serious bad hair day! Fix the first problem and then wait and see. Your warning light will reset unless the problem persists for maybe a couple hundred miles or less but if not running well it needs more. T
