post locked   Side view mirror fix

Newbie to forum and need some help. I have a 2005 Chevy 2500 HD diesel and the passenger side view mirror popped off and the plastic chipped. I need to replace the part, but have been looking for hours and don't know what it is called. The mirror that rock auto has as a replacement is a Dorman 955671. I have 2 white "sticks" and the mirror, but need to replace the white piece, it is chipped so the ball heads on the end of the stick will not stay. Thanks in advance for your help!! I am uploading photos, it is very slow so I am going ahead and posting this.

Holy crap sport
shrink those pics or
delete them. They
are so big they are useless.
Broken side views on trucks:
Aftermarket is in on this as you
found. OE whole thing would be tons of
money. Plain glass is local and cheap but
no heater, possible to lose power adjust
if plastic thing can't work or be glued.
Most work by pushing on glass anyway
if you don't care and want cheap fix.
If this has directional inside as well it
would be more bucks and might
be mandatory for that to work?
Depending on requirements/features I'd check
out used or at least ask. Would have to
come from a vehicle where whole door
is junk for another reason,

I deleted your post with the pictures. You need to dramatically reduce the size of those pictures before attempting to re-post them. They make the whole thread unreadable.

From what i could see it just looks like you need to replace the whole mirror complete. Most of those internal parts are not sold separately.

Thanks for deleting the pics. I am trying to make them smaller. Is there anywhere you might know where I can get the piece? It seems so easy to replace. I am a college student and this is my dads truck I was using. It just snaps to the back of the mirror and the power adjust screws itself back in. The whole unit is $450.

I don't know anywhere that sells the parts for this unless you just buy a used one and take it apart.

Quote">>The whole unit is $450.<<" If dealer, that's probably spot on for this. If you can't find a used one cheaper perhaps even broken but not the same parts yours has you will be on a hunt for price. Saw Amazon and Ebay ones but didn't go for costs for trucks they are more common IMO than cars as they stick out more.

There are things you can glue up well and good looking and things you won't. Depending on features it has counts. Powered for adjustment, powered to pull in, lights either directional or a down light under it operable?

IMO $450 doesn't sound that expensive so far. Sorry it is to you - I wouldn't be thrilled either but you did it and should expect to return it as good as it never happened IMO or don't use other people's cars,

IDK - that didn't show. Only got out of that it's the right side mirror. You can just do the equivalent of a R click, copy, they again R click + paste if you device does that of the specs only or the pic not the whole ads from ebay in general not allowed here.

Seems you aren't sure what features the broken one did have. Well, what features does the unbroken one have? I would think the same as far as "heated" (the symbol of that showed when your pics the size of Texas were here) but does it also have LED directional arrow AND a down light for running boards or entry? I don't know what feature it has if you don't!

About now I think you can forget bargains if you don't have a clue what it was it will probably cost even more than the $450 you once posted when I thought you knew what you needed or did somebody or place quote you that #?

Did this also harm paint and metal? If so this could be up to insurance claim costs!

The web is great but if you don't know which of those you need by the ad you need someone to look at the problem that does and come up with what it will need perhaps an estimate from a dealer, other shop or auto body shop that will talk cash vs insurance if applicable at all for pricing.

Can you do this no matter what parts cost? Sure you can search that out like you found this forum but there are limits if you have no clue.

Right now I think you should spring the bucks for an estimate with part #s from a body shop to put this back and working the way it was so next search on your device should be the phone # of a place of your liking near you so they can see it in person.

Refresh: Did it harm metal of the door and paint? Changes everything,

T
(edit in pic and price of a mirror I think you have)

That size works better + suggest all features for towing it reaches farther out than non apparently.

That was $141.22 unknown shipping. Pop up for the whole link - Amazon boldly wanted to know what features you need.

These do tricks. Has heat we know, directional likely, manual or power extended and or fold in such that you can put truck in a standard garage or even to park it as needed.

Many were available used on that site. Not allowed but this should get you started but this is if YOU are doing the work OR have some existing agreement for a place to install it. Body work if involved is unique to each accident now and is now an accident repair not just a part replacement - know the difference.......
Amazon's page............
http://www.amazon.com/...Driver/dp/B003UEBQYC (scroll for passenger's side)
If you can do better some other way do so. Again sport - if you have no clue what you need you need help from a shop that will take this on,

This is the pic of the parting out mirror. I will try to get another pic up of the piece I need to see if it what it is called. My mirror has auto adjust with turn signal. Does heated mean wired? Thanks!

This is the piece I need. The place where the stick snaps in is cracked. There is no damage to the truck. I was backing up while planting deer fields and the mirror hit a tree. There was no damage at all until I tried to fix it.

Pics aren't for you. Not for me either so copy off the web shown above in my post. Can't see crap in that pic but did see I'll call the "icon" for a heated mirror which is several squiggly lines and in broken part two spade terminals that nothing was hooked up to.

Guessing and now you should do some surfing for parts alone as I just did. The guess is it has all possible features for a tow truck well equipped.

If not matching your broken parts if you have enough of old stuff to new at a parts counter there's some risk. A dealer might be able to parts match whole unit exactly? If you don't ask in person at least call for options and questions they will ask.
It's clear this thing has several possible features to this part alone already said unlikely to get just single new parts to fix new so already suggested a pick your own junk yard if any around you have one you can check out in person yourself with your own tools if like here they'll take what you want out at greater cost but might match it up for you too with old one in hand.

*******************************************
IMO we are going to beat this horse to death not knowing if you can do this at all as simple as it might look and seem it probably isn't and need some tools to do it, some rentable, some not.

Right now it seems you have put all your cards in the web and having a problem that's hard to even search out. As ex or current techs we have been there many times and have mega bucks tied up in tools and never enough. The web is going to fail you if you can't articulate specifics comprehendible to another.
I can sympathize with costs AND being in college - got the T-Shirt, done it cost a fortune and worked like a nut case on the side constantly with a full course load AND worked. Typed papers endlessly for bucks, food service and on cars too on 2 hours sleep and a party animal when I could too! Had to pay for my own car(s) and fix them too so I get it. I can't know your "Row to Hoe" with that aspect or opportunities thereof.
Doesn't matter if you attend colleges till you end up with a doctorate the end all game is learning how to learn. Was then and is now. So far you still haven't said if this involves painted metal areas already asked which would change the entire fix if you intend to get this fixed totally and properly.

This is quickly coming to a dead end with how to help you if you can't help yourself,

New again. Now I see that broken part. Know this. It may not glue well or at all. If with a Silicone you lose ability to use something else if that doesn't work unless you can create something threaded that works as well as needed.
If you brought this mess to me I'd probably fix what you have but you'd leave it with me for curing time and testing up to giving up and ME going junk hunting for the dang thing for you.
Bring just the broken part to a place if you can. If you choose to risk it with glue I suggest brand name GOOP at hardware and wholesale hardware supplies like Home Depot type places. Don't ask for the way know what you want first. Some do know you can or can't with what they have.
Think: The cap of a glue is usually made of a plastic that doesn't stick to it so your part may be of that type too. There are people who are good at plastic welding, I'm not so good at that.
Still I say you are depending on the web too much. The right person in PERSON even high end parts places can know at a glance or suggest where or who can for this.
Why are you so reluctant to get some advice from people who do this in person?

As things go if cost are no object this is an easy fix! My guess is this is quite common with the extended mirrors especially if left OUT. I've personally broken two, one on a narrow road so narrow another truck with plain large side mirrors and my own touched enough to break another on again my own w bad luck touched side of a garage and glass broke only. Whole manual unit on that is only $40 bucks aftermarket or ~$12 for just glass! Stuff like that happens. First was joint fault second was lazy on my part not to manually get out and push whole mirror in and would have fit just wasn't paying enough attention as I know it's tight passage.

Sorry it happened to you and is a more complicated one only to match up or fix. Others so cheap not worth fixing.

If your still allowed to drive this thing let the body shop look at it for a better clue at at least. Then either bring in just the part if you want them to fix it or look for a whole one if you have the tools. About now if you want or find used locally and can't replace it yourself the shop would probably (can't say each shop's policy) would be happy if YOU got the right part.
Good luck. Understand anyone wanting to save a buck but sometimes you just can't,

I don't pay for the software with exact details for each vehicle so can say how many are attached. Inside there may/should be a panel like a triangle color of door panel usually maybe not. It should pull off or carefully pry off with a tool with a slot for no damage or off with your hands.

Then maybe plastic hiding and keeping moisture out to pull back or cut to expose usually 3 nuts when removed and wiring unplugged the mirror assembly just comes right off whole.
Duh - don't drop the nuts down in the door or force anything. If still too hard to remove look harder for a hidden extra fastener.

Use a strong magnet (I do) with things that can fall like that real close to the nut you expect to come off.

OK - say you lose one. It's either pull whole panel off to look for it with magnetic pick up things or by hand if possible or take one to a hardware store and match it up and leave the lost one.
May need 1/4 inch socket set with swivel ability to get at them? When installing tape if needed the nut to a socket so it can't fall off or hold magnet again real close to catch it.

For fun testing my own guessing: It's a 6mm X 1.25 nut, six point!

Last - tape up any torn plastic wrecked out of sight and be done with it,

Tom

That looks like the mirror actuator. Like in this pic. (2) If that is true, it is around $120 from the dealer. The whole mirror is around $700.

If you want to get it from the dealer, just run over to a GM dealership, show them the picture, and give them the vehicle's VIN number. They should be able to look it up in their system and give you a price and to see if the part is available.
