Last March, I bought a 2001 Olds Intrigue. Right after I brought it home, I had a loud squealing coming from the driver's side on cold starts. It lasted around 30 - 40 seconds. I was told it was the smog pump?, and that northern climates would cause the pump to fail annually. Lo and behold, it's July of the next year, and the same sound is happening in the same manner. Really frustrating. Is there any way to remove the smog pump permanently?

That's crazy! They can last indefinately. I'm driving with one with 209,000 miles on it at 18 years old!! Buy one with a lifetime warranty if it's bad again. I try to find them used but the junk ones aren't good if they sat around a while too long. This should NOT be periodic maintenance for any vehicle I know of, T
