Speedometer and Odometer not working - 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 Sign In

Hello all, this is my first post.

About my truck:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab
V8 5.3L
Automatic

My grandpa gave me this truck about 4 years ago and the speedometer wasn’t working then. He bought it new and said it went out at some point after that. He thinks it’s something with the servo that controls the dial arm. It doesn’t read anything, it just stays at zero.

Almost half a year ago my odometer stopped working at 124879. (It’s a digital odometer).

All of the other dials on the dashboard work, at least it seems like they do.

I’ve checked the fuses and to my untrained eye they look fine. After some research I decided to replace the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission, hoping it might fix both. However, nothing happened.

Any idea what could be wrong? Suggestions as to the next cheapest repair would be appreciated.

They had a lot of problems with dash clusters. You need a bidirectional scan tool to test it.

A few options.
1. On the highway, set a stopwatch at a mileage marker. Check the time at the next mileage marker. For reference, at 60 miles per hour take 1 minute. So if your stopwatch says 45 seconds, you can safely assume you're traveling at 75 miles per hour.
2. Buy a police radar gun. Pace the car in front of you and take a speed reading, and that should be your speed.
3. For the odometer, keep track of routes you've driven and use google maps to give you a distance and you can keep a log book and that way, you'll have a better idea when your truck is due for maintenance.

The speedometer reads zero. I think he can assume it's wrong without timing anything.
