Sqealing noise from under hood Sign In

I have a 1999 GMC Truck about 127,000 miles and here lately I've noticed this noise coming from under the hood. It only does this when I first get in it and leave and go down the road while it is still showing 160 o not warmed up yet but after it warms up it stops making the noise. What would cause this noise? I was told by a friend of mine who is a mechanic, but so busy and when I do go to let him here the noise there is no noise ,that it could be the tensioner. The belts are fine, radiator was flushed last year and the guy checked the water pump, fan etc.nothing bad.I just noticed this a few months ago. I also notice a noise (like a lifters knocking) coming from under the drivers side but that would not be anything like that, because I always keep oil changed and use Lucas oil treatment. The noise is only durning warm up nothing else. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a belt issue to me.

Belt squeal is fairly common. Try some WD-40 on the belt and if it shuts right up replace the belt with a quality belt - they make them advertized to be quiet belts and they do work when pulleys are shinned up with some miles on them.

Knock: Is oil pressure fast and high right at cold start up? Any neglect with this engine - sludge on dipstick or under oil cap seen? There are some Vortec 5.7s that have mild piston slap and no other problems. Just high quality oil should minimize noise and it usually doesn't kill the motor. Rumor has it GM tried some shorter piston skirts on some and that was a side effect??

 some things you could try.

1. like mentioned before with the wd-40 on the belt surfaces.

2: WITH EXTREME CAUTION. while the engine is running, take a LONG prybar, rachet extenion, screw driver. (something long enough to keep your face away from the engine. and hold it to the different engine accesories, like your alternator, PS pump. or whaterver else you have easy access to. put your ear up to the extension and listen for bearing noise.

3. remove the serpentine belt and spin each pulley by hand and listen for squeaks or odd rolling noises. its possible that when the bearings in the pulleys are cold, they squeak but when they warm up the metal expands and closes the internal space difference eliminating the squeak you hear
