Starter motor works on bench but not in car

I've got a denso starter motor that was clicking and only spinning occasionally after reputedly turning the key so I "rebuilt" it and now it works fine on the bench but still does the same thing in the car. I've fitted a starter motor from a different vehicle and it seems to work every time I turn the key. Could it be the ignition circuit going bad and the other starter requires less amps or something and that's why it works and the other doesn't?

OK, YOU rebuilt it not bought that way? It works in another vehicle and on bench barely counts but does some. Just clicking and sometimes cranks engine?
I'm asking those questions it's just not so clear to me.
I'll guess away that starter probably is enough but lacks proper amps to it now via lousy cables or still a connection somewhere don't forget grounds.
Please try to start off with what the vehicle is helps as a baseline in this case I made a fair guess. The next would be lousy trigger wire connection, after that it's too tight and needs shims but can't go there quite yet,

I asked HT on that and do, do some. If new parts it's what you just said. I shine up contacts NOT like turning them - no metal to do that anymore and or shine up brushes. Then run them like a break-in. Most work fine but no load test ability (by me) the test is in vehicle.
The joke is on us with buying rebuilds - that's about all they can do too! Now hard to find guts to costly stuff this might be if easy R&R try but still just smell not enough amps? T

I'm sure he didn't grind the armature, test the armature, replace the magnets, replace the bearings, etc.

IDK what's possible on this one? Been a while most no bearings just bushings. If "magnets" are NFG it's gone to me. It's ones where "glaze" is wrecking contact of brushes to armature surfaces you can fix new or just clean up is what local BRAND NAME rebuilder does! It's why we get new if we can on this stuff NOT meant to redo them since Eisenhower, Rambler, DeSoto and Studebaker were household words. Laugh - still have one with oil cups at the bushings!

I'm certain he didn't granulate the armature, test the armature, supplant the magnets, supplant the orientation, and so on.

Ok i shouldn't have said "rebuilt". I replaced the plunger and contacts and took the whole thing apart and cleaned every contact surface i could fine and greased all bearings.
The car is a 1989 subaru l series.
The starter motor now works fine when testing it on the bench (didn't work during test bench before contact and plunger replacement) but still only clicks when fitted to the vehicle.
I ftried another starter motor from a Subaru liberty in my l series and it works 100%.

Working on the bench with no load means nothing as to how it will act when under load.

But the fact it didn't work on the bench before and now that I've replaced the contacts and plunger it works on the bench does tell you something. :) any reason for the hostility?

Yes, it tells me that the old starter was totally worn out and should have been replaced, not repaired.
It's 39 years old and a couple of brushes and some oil isn't going to make it new again.

Couldve said that the first time. Since it's a genuine part it was definitely worth trying to fix since you can't buy them new anymore and the replacement parts are cheap Chinese garbage.

Raynman: Truth is the parts for "rebuilding" are junk also!
Late here now, duly noted from top post this lacked info on what was being worked on just a few posts back is from or about an 89 Subaru? That's a mix of age old quality you could work with or junk new IDK which, you need to look hard at the one in front of you.
The best of the best was first made to be 6 volt! Those you could machine down again and again, get real parts and just keep going.
Just BTW - the brand name smacks of quality (Denso) at least once the name was enough. Know that these names sold out also to that cheap junk buying that brand name only and sell you the junk new? Hard to know but need to.
Said I'll do this isn't enough sometimes the subject vehicle is such junk overall don't waste good $$ on it as it will croak from a 100 other problems lurking so just buying some time.
Load testing?: Said I can't except for putting a "starter" in this case in the engine for the load simply don't own or have access to a machine to do that. Jumping around on a work bench or floor testing one isn't under load but shows it works at all only.
This thread is all about that isn't so easy to know where the problem is now knowing what we are dealing with default would probably be new rather than redo/rebuild is just cleaning these up it's way past high quality to begin with - still guessing I don't have the thing in my hands to make that call,

You're right, even if the whole things was rebuilt it would be with junk parts and I'm probably better off just buying a replacement thr only problem is they're ridiculously expensive and have a huge amount of bad reviews.
I'll pretend you didn't call my car junk:) it's a project car that's why I'm reluctant to spend money in it and yes I know 100 other things will break but that's project cars for you also a lifted, ej22 swapped l series like mine isn't that common and I love its irrelevant how "junk" you think it is.
Although you seem to have an issue with people trying to fix old things instead of throwing them in the bin I will thank you for your advice:)
