My 2003 citroen xsara has intermittent starter problems. When I crank the key the starter will sometimes turn slowly or not at all. On the days that the starter will not turn I can start the car by giving it a boost. Does this mean I can rule out the starter motor as the fault?

Chances are battery if it will always work with a boost. If an older battery just toss it for quality new and if newer have it tested if available to you or charge it, watch voltage drop while cranking which should both crank engine and if you watch headlights they shouldn't go very dim if this model leaves them on while cranking, T
