post icon Subaru no crank no start after shift lock bypass Sign In

2011, Subaru Legacy, 2.5, 120xxxRandom day the car wouldn't shift out of park, but WOULD start. I pressed the shift lock bypass next to/under the shifter. It did not release and still wouldn't/won't shift out of park. Now it also won't start at all either. There is no clicking, cranking, nothing. I replaced the brake light switch which seemingly did nothing. The battery is fully charged. I desperately need help.

Sounds like the issues are in the shifter. The lock solenoid is integral to the shifter mechanism. You have likely moved it enough that it's not indicating in park any more so it won't crank.

You are likely going to have to replace the whole shifter mechanism unless you find something jammed in it.

Can you push shifter back and see "P" again? IDK seems forced as Hammer said now damaged.

IDK rules but if car rolls now it's not in Park and wouldn't start just because of that. Same - if bent enough it has to be game-over.

OK if a total loss to move the thing might be able to undo where shifter turns on trans and AYOR if that's possible CAREFUL car may run and take off in a gear. Dangerous - seek helper so car can't fly away from you if you can do that at all,

The shifter never left "P" So, yes I can still see it. The shifter never left park. It wouldn't even release from park. I didn't try to force it because I was afraid to break it.
I removed the plastic cover and used a screw driver to press the shift lock bypass, as I had seen in video tutorials. First I just tried to press it and shift out of park but it wouldn't budge. So, I pressed the bypass and tried to start the car and that's when I realized the engine is now somehow disabled.

All the lights come on the dash like normal but there is no response from the engine. I took the battery out and charged it to rule that out as an issue.

Idk if the car would roll. I haven't tried to roll it since I have no reason to believe it would not be in park? When you say where the shifter turns on trans are we talking about the shift linkage?

Since the car would start right before I pressed the shift bypass and then wouldn't right after I was guessing there had to be some safety lockout design. What would cause that (the safety lock) and why wouldn't it be cleared after one of the many times I've unhooked the battery?

Also, I changed out brake light switch because I read that if you have remote start (I do) and the switch goes out it can disable the transmission. Sometimes it can prevent the car from starting.

If you have headlights, horn loud forget battery unless a door left open as you don't have any reaction yet.

Now hit a problem spot is the remote starter! If a Subaru factory item (doubt that) would be better. AFTERMARKET on the things go bad have defaults to kill engine as it's not attended.

If you had that installed or still know who/where did I suggest taking it all out the failure rate is astounding.

No force on shifter? Good so far. Have been bypassing seem that quit working. Hammer said it's a unit start looking for it new it's in the cards.

For now it's behaving like "neutral safety switch" thinks it's in a gear not park or neutral. It wouldn't start if normally in any other position.

You could see that at starter motor a trigger wire wouldn't light a test light, strong bet if you tested that prove what I think, nothing.

How that remote starter hacked (probably) wiring could be the whole issue plus IDK why the emergency bypass to move shifter broke inside somehow.

Multiple things to check may now be two issues? Maybe three from unhooking battery so much, once enough may default some anti-theft feature to ON? Hard to know each vehicle's way to disable itself see if you can look that up the common thing is disable fuel pump the better way disable starter motor IMO so it doesn't just crank itself and take that out too.

May need some help for now no longer OE wiring to start finding out what safety stuff that did?

Re: Subaru no crank no start after shift lock bypass Sign In

The first thing to do is test all your fuses using a test light with the key on.

If the fuses are good, then the shift lock solenoid and the park range switch are built into one unit. That's probably what's preventing it from starting but this switch is controlled by the Body Control Module so this isn't "cut and dry" and a bit more complicated. A tech would use a scan tool capable of reading the BCM data to find out what is commanded and what is responding.
