Sudden Clutch Failure why? Sign In

Hi guys. I have a peugeot 307 hdi 2.0 90. I was driving home the other day and the clutch felt like it got stuck on the mat for a second. Which I pulled out of the way. What had really happened, I am not sure. I was stuck in neutral at a roundabout no less haha. I pushed her to the side of the road and called a tow truck. Im in spain and they didnt answer so I had her started playing about and managed to get into first and get home, slowly. I'm not sure how old the clutch is. There was no slipping previously. No warning. She drove great. With car off I can change gears freely. Start in first and second with key and a little gas. I checked the fluid level. Its hard to see past mesh but it seems pretty full. Assuming this car has hydraulic clutch. I know not much, just what I have read since. Sorry if I have missed anything. No smell of burning. No fluid puddle thanks.

It's hard to figure out what you are trying to say but think you mean the car feels like you are trying to drive without using a clutch pedal at all - right?

The LINKAGE is hydraulically pushed not the clutch itself in this style. It can fail such that pushing the pedal doesn't release the clutch, shifting would be hard to impossible, stopping in gear it would stall - is it like that? Then shift fine with engine off like you said.

They don't sell this car to the US but the clutch linage idea the same on many. If like I said it could fail to push clutch itself and not leak. Usually with a helper with car off is fine just watch for motion of the clutch pivoting under the hood while helper pushes clutch pedal. If nothing or something then moves back by itself it can't hold.

Doesn't sound like you'll be fixing it but expect a clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder and maybe a hose any or all possible for the fix,

PS: Two reservoirs usually for cars with this set up. One is for brakes, another for the clutch. Did you check the right one?

Yes, that's it. The clutch is sort of left as if it is untouched. As opposed to being depressed. There is one resevoir for brake and clutch on this model it seems.i can start it in first with the gear engaged prior to firing. I can float gears to drive around the block. All is normal apart from I can't use the clutch. I'll see if I can spot any movement when my lady finishes work. Thanks!

OK - Almost certain that's it and will end it to change those out.

Now - since this shares what most since forever would use is BRAKE FLUID you must be certain nobody could have possibly put any other product in that to top it off!
By that I mean an oil even power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid or engine oil would ruin all rubber seals now in both clutch hydraulics and brakes! You really should look back if there's any chance or someone else could have.

A strong clue if that is the rubber under the cap where you fill it would show swelling but take some time. Weeks or days unknown but if happed or swollen now get this checked out ASAP.

Clutch thing can do just what you describe - annoying by surprise but happens. Ahhhhh - don't wish to detail it but you could drive this car without a clutch but need to have strong understanding of what I'll call "Double Clutching" and shut off for stops. Not for a long way but it can be done. Don't even try to if not absolutely sure what you are doing as you could do lots of damage force shifting a transmission!

OK - only thing to do now it look for that rubber swelling. Oils should float on top of brake fluid if problem was right away but if used at all and it was it's thru the system - show a real tech of that if YOU suspect it at all - too serious if so.

Good luck. Otherwise should be a normal fix and if older w some miles and parts are not out of control expensive I'd just do all parts with rubber as said above but up front failure is only one of them right now,
