Truck hard to start

1998 Tacoma 2.4L
I have changed plugs, checked plug wires, fuel pressure is good, replaced MAF sensor.
Starter is strong. Battery is perfect.
Here is the odd fact: the truck is normally garaged, and takes several spins from the starter before cranking. On 2 different days, both with temps below 30, the truck was parked outdoors, and cranked immediately each day. What would be the connection with it starting better in freezing weather?

Please clear up some confusion on just what you said above. Take a while to begin "cranking?" Do you mean starter is humming away but not turning the engine for that time?
It totally matters on what to do next. If you mean "running" where you put the word takes time to crank is where confusion is to me.
Starters have to kick out called a "starter drive" smaller gear it either may not move it out or does and that gear is one way would free spin with noise.
Chances are the practical issue is a whole starter just drives are hard to find for me that or teeth missing so badly in fly wheel/aka ring gear would give a lousy sound and only might engage?
A pro ear backed up with a look so you don't waste doing a wrong fix,

I understood this to mean it has a long crank before starting.
What I would suggest is to get your hands on a scan tool that has data capability. Hook it up after the car has been parked overnight and before starting it and look at the readings for both Intake Air temp sensor and Coolant temp sensors. If the car has not been started, these sensors should both read the same temp.

Thank you for your response!
The starter is turning the engine, but it takes approx 2 full seconds to crank.(as in thousand one, thousand two)
I believe the starter is performing as it should. They mystery to me is the immediate start in very cold weather

There is not a check engine light on at this time. I understand your suggestion about the scan tool. I would need one that does more than just read DTC, but one that can check the status of components. I will try to find someone with one of those. Thank you

Hi again;
Both sensors temps were same. Truck has extended start and shakes when first started. When I get to destination, shut if off then restart, it cranks as it should. But after sitting awhile, it again has difficulty starting. Again, no check engine light, plugs are good, MAF sensor is good. Fuel pressure is good.

Even if you aren't getting a check engine light you still could have stored codes. I would get a quality scan tool of code reader and have them checked. There has to be something to give us a starting point here.
I went back an reread your question and I didn't see anywhere that you checked fuel pressure before cranking it after being parked overnight. You need to see how quickly the pressure comes up to spec and whether that corresponds with the engine starting.

OK So, fuel pressure is good. No trouble codes present. MAF is good. Sometimes it cranks as it should. Most of the time it takes several turns. Plugs and wires are good. Air pressure temp and coolant temp are consistent. It has backfired twice. Once it cranks, whether quickly or slowly, the truck shakes for several seconds. I know it's tough to diagnose without seeing it in person, but any thoughts are helpful Thanks!
