I have a 2002 VW Beetle, I'm not sure about the engine size, it has around 120k miles on it..

Recently the check engine light came on, and since then it has been stalling sometimes (not every time), when I come to a stop or slow down. Generally I can just start it back up again, but a few days ago it stalled out in traffic and would not turn over. The engine made the "roorooroo" (heh) sound of trying to start, but never turned over. I took it to a mechanic and it started right away, then stalled on the way home. When it stalls out the battery light comes on.

I just want to get an idea of what kinds of problems can cause this issue before I take it to a dealership and get charged an arm and a leg for them to do a diagnostic. Can you help?

Will it run enough to get the code reading on it? It's free at many chain and other parts stores now - AutoZone for one and you would have an idea what's going on,
