This is a very intermittent issue I am having. The vehicle drives fine usually on the highway, however, sometimes when going from highway to stop and go the gas pedal becomes unresponsive around 2000 RPMs when I have the gas pedal partially depressed I press it more and it does nothing(the RPMs drop and if I keep pressing the pedal it shuts the engine completely off). Sometime I can recover preventing it from shutting down when I notice the gas pedal is unresponsive I can release it and repress it and that usually recovers the vehicle as if nothing is wrong and it drives fine. It seems to occur when stress is applied on the engine like when going up a slight hill.
Any ideas of what it could be? I replaced various vacuum and PCV hoses and replaced the MAF. It still occurs.

A few idea only to suggest:
1. If your user name is somehow a password dump it for anything else.
2. There should be an RPM limiter electronically sensing too much RPMs for it is failing. Good chance a high end code reading would or could come up with a fault where to look doesn't mean which parts just that info stored even if no warning lights are on.
3. Just don't do tossing parts if you can help it at all this is important to know you've found it. My reason is a hair across my butt with bad new crap parts if you do a lot with no change each was NOT the problem and probably not as good as originals depending on just what. PCV operational stays that way the hoses holding vacuum can and do age no problem use the best grade you can get and marked for PCV, fuel or what right on the hose.
Intermittent never helps to stumble on and know your frustration. Try hard to pin it down yes vacuum leaking just wrong in any place that holds vacuum fully ruled out as much as possible. Smoke tests most popular and effective for an active one I'll try the assortment of ways for intermittent problems look for things with diaphragms that do NOT like "Bra-Kleen" (sp?) by brand is not flammable will stall out when it hits a spot or defect right then or lower idle speed*
I've changed suggestions from other sprays that are flammable test any you use away from the vehicle totally on something out of harm's way,

Is there a particular scanning tool that can pick up more codes. I bought a 30 dollars vag com which is made specifically for VW cars. It was able to pickup codes before that my regular odbc II scanner could not pick up. However, this time the VW vag com is not picking up anything.

$30! No, that wont do. Try your area for Autozones or others now do it for free with better still should be something in wait/pending. Assorted abilities see what the free ones show or off to up to a dealer and get a full printout of what it says. It's Euro no matter where it's made would think your device would do something but don't count on it the service alone will cost more than that if you pay.
I've learned FREE readings isn't legal in some places so ask around or check web sites of places near you for better.
You might find a vacuum leak? Check at more than hoses like the gaskets in and around throttle body and intake. Already said any vacuum operated things you see as well.
You need to tell me if this uses a cable for throttle or all electronic just look how it open throttle and at gas pedal either end could be at fault but don't just go replacing stuff as mentioned YET. This is VERY important IMO to dangerous would really like to pin it down and know it's fixed not just luck of parts tossing,

Seems like it is the Fuel Pump. Apparently VW car have no codes for intermittent fuel pump issues. It seems like it fails more so when going up and down hills.

What testing have you done to come to that conclusion?

None really just had several people on VW forum say they experienced the same issue. No codes and shut down randomly. It has been taking longer to get it to start after it shuts down now. It seems to have enough pressure when not stressed. Also, I tend to run the gas tank very low a lot.

Just what I figured............
If you continuously run the fuel very low, that will destroy your fuel pump.
It's time to stop guessing and do some testing. You can waste a whole bunch of money simply throwing parts at it.

You don't have to tell me what is hard to diagnose. I've been doing it for 50 years.
You still can't rely on Billie Bob who owned a VW 10 years ago and thinks he is an expert now because him and Bubba took it all apart and it never ran again.
Testing has to be done while the problem is present and that is the only way to accurately diagnose the problem.
