VW Passat Advice Needed

I have a 1998 VW Passat station wagon that burns oil. One garage said I need a new turbo. Another said I need a new engine -- and quoted me a repair cost of $4,500 which exceeds the outstanding amount of my loan. I love this car but can't afford the repairs I'm being told to do. What do you suggest?

You need a real diagnosis as to where the oil is really going. If worn engine overall but still runs well you could up the oil to heavier viscosities to kink of cover it for a while. I'm not quite sure how the turbo action itself is the cause of oil consumption?? T
