Water pump Sign In

07 Chevy impala 3.5 150.000 miles
Have to put in new water pump, impala call for dexcool antifreeze, does it matter ? Also power steering fluid is boiling, have to change that too, some pumps call for vacuum bleeding , how can I get around this or do it ? Thanks for your help once again

Re: Water pump Sign In

Dexcool: Lots of "urban lore" on the stuff from the get go. I just use it and avoid the bull about it, so far no troubles. 50/50 as suggested.
PS fluid boiling? Just what do you mean - foaming or what's going on with these two issues at the same time if you know? It's a hydraulic pump should self purge out air that shouldn't be in it unless leaking and too low.
Basics - hoist front wheels so it isn't working hard and steer left and right to stops but not force it. This stuff I don't change out unless some reason rather empty reservoirs fill again a few times to mostly have all new (just close) by dilution you get the new additives are greatly to be anti-foaming and is a strong detergent by itself that does lose it over time and use.
If the most common driver of this vehicle has the habit of fighting power assist when wheels are fully turned to the stops that causes problems so that habit needs correcting it's too hard on pressure side,

You should listen to both of those advisories.

Yes, Dexcool is needed for your system as it is a silicate free coolant. Silicant will damage your system.

Vacuum bleeding is highly recommended because it is the only solid way to remove air pockets in the system. Driving the car with an air pocket is a good way to end up with a blown head gasket on that engine.

Right - cooling systems now would suggest only vacuum bleeding just not the time to fuss and be wrong. Sorry that my post was thinking you were do that to PS system?
Having better results with now Prestone's PS fluid w here it says you can use ATF and not sure why don't argue with good results? T

Re: Water pump Sign In

sry tom, I was just stating that I had to change water pump on my sons car also, but I was mainly talking about the power steering, he said it was boiling and he has a winning sound coming from it, but it looks to me to be just foaming, we swapped it out with one from a bone yard and it started making the winning sound right off the ba, was looking at one from carparts.com and it said to make sure you do a vacuum bleed after install, don't understand that
the thing about his water pump is hes says car is running too hot, but he hasn't had to put any water or antifreeze in his car and I told him hey its hot out so its going to be running hotter, but im going to check it out today, told him to take off the cap to see if he can see water circulating, guess ill have to do it for him
thanks t

Re: Water pump Sign In

Nothing want to run hot also with some areas of pretty high heat if the first time for this car it might run hotter at slow speeds and or stopped and be normal.
I'm getting mixed up with that and PS buzzing is not boiling and yes you see agitation of fluid it's moving some all the time and will default I can't know each exact set up, if it has a cooler or not plus reservoir may be remote to pump itself do have to think a bit how to fill it.

That's an oil product can't be mixed up with another fluid may have with used pump have who knows what in it still? These two things are separate systems in a way still neither like being too hot. Oils make a sticky shellac if way too hot is another fix but once buzzing assorted problems could happen because of a failed pump and not just a pump alone.

Just a note on coolant again: It isn't consuming it apparently but know it also must hold pressure and be intact to the fill cap hose to tank pressure to there or just recovery tank if not intact will read full and not be so that has to be known good plus whatever the game with which coolant it need some never just water alone if that was in the cards along the way is real problems but so is antifreeze way too strong too so have to know - check it should read -34F and unfortunately check with two different testers many are not very accurate - some just plain way too far off,

That just means there is air in the system. Shut it down for a while and then top it off. Start it only momentarily until all the air is out. It will slowly rise to the top.
