Weird car hiccup/cough Sign In

Hi all,So this problem has recently presented it on my year 2000 VW Polo 6n2 with the 60hp 1.4MPI gasoline engine. Sometimes when the engine is cold and occasionally when its hot aswell, the car will feel like its loosing power for a very brief moment whilst im accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear. I just serviced the car myself and changed the spark plugs, oil and oil filter to OEM parts listed in my Haynes manual. This problem would mostly happen before i serviced the car but has also happened a couple of times after the service. There are two holes that i found on the exhaust, one on the sidewall on the middle muffler and one on the seams between the catalytic converter and the pipe to the middle muffler. When i changed the spark plugs i found oil residue on one of the plugs, i might check the new plug to see if this has happened again. Other than this the car always starts on the first try, it´s only driven 160.000km and has had regular service at a verified garage before my ownership. The engine sounds good and all fluids are topped off with the correct OEM stuff listed in my Haynes manual.
Any help or ideas as to what this problem can be would be very nice, and would allow this, my first car, to live for years to come.

Re: Weird car hiccup/cough Sign In

We don't have that car here in the US so we don't have anything specific.

It's not really weird. It sounds like the beginnings of a common misfire. Could be bad spark plug or weak coil. It will eventually set a code and put the check engine light on. That will be good as the code should identify which cylinder.

I suspect the oil you saw on the spark plug was on the outside of the plug. That just means the valve cover is leaking and needs a new gasket.

Ok thanks for the reply and making me see this problem in a different way. The oil was indeed on the outside of the plug and since this car is old i would expect a gasket change would be ideal.
I will take some time to study the coil and check if it is faulty and most likely do a full redo of all the spark stuff.A friend of mine has an OBD scan tool so i could use that to see if it spits out a misfire code.

That's pretty much impossible to locate the bad one without a code. It's pretty hard to duplicate the problem on command.
