Which car do I keep? Sign In

In 1996, I bought a brand new Mustang GT hardtop, V8 engine. It now has 108,000 miles on it and runs well. It's been consistently maintained. There are minor fixes needed, the music system needs replaced, and I need new brakes. The biggest thing I don't like about the Mustang is the '96 trunk design. I often need to wrestle things into the back seat because they won't fit into the trunk opening. I get 15-20 miles to the gallon. It's always been garaged and looks very nice, inside and out. The AC is ice cold.

My elderly mother lost her license and recently gave me her loaded, 2002 Cougar XR. It only has 14,000 miles on it. I got the body all buffed out and it looks and runs like a brand new car. It gets between 20 and 28 mpg, as far as I can tell. It's smaller than my Mustang but it's got a hatchback that I can fit a massage table into. It's black inside and out. I live in Texas, so it's hot as an oven in the summer. The AC is adequate.

My dilemma? Which car do I keep? The Mustang I love to drive or the Cougar, which I only like?
I am alone, over 50, and depend on others to work on my car. I can't afford to buy new cars every five years, but I absolutely need dependable transportation. I tend to keep things a long time.

It seemed clear to me, until I actually got the Cougar and realized how much I like the Mustang. Now I am soliciting opinions. Please give me your opinion.
Am I being too sentimental about my long-time love or is the 12 year old Mustang a better choice than the five year old Cougar? In five years, would I still be happy with a 17 year old Mustang or a ten year old Cougar? Help! I'm really conflicted and don't know what the smart solution is.
I've even thought of selling both cars and buying a used car of my choice, but I doubt if I could find a better car than the almost new Cougar for the 15-16K I'd have to spend.

The Cougar is more practical. Hey - the Mustang is fun and you love it. I like a motorcycle now and then and then hate them as of course they are totally impractical.

Only downside is a black car in a warm climate will be harder to cool,

Exactly the dilemma--is life about being practical or having fun?
You'd think I'd have that figured out by now. I sold my motorcycles ten years ago...
Thanks for your input.
It's appreciated!
