I have a 1988 Grand Prix with a 2.8 liter engine that is leaking oil around the oil pump drive. To replace the O-ring seal, is it necessary to remove the plenum or to just remove the throttle body to gain access to the drive gear? Thankyou

Re: Oil Leak Sign In

I think you can get away with just removing the throttle plate housing. While you’re there, you may as well replace the two small coolant hoses, they are usually baked hard as stone and you’ll have to undo one end of them any way. It may be easier to cut the old ones off then try and save them.
Also as you go to start pulling the drive housing itself, it will likely be stuck in the block and you may have to work at freeing it. I use a pair of vice grips clamped to the top, to give me some leverage. As it starts to come free watch out for the hexagon drive shaft it could stick to the housing and then fall off into the oil pan.
I always use a bit of silicone along with the new O-ring seal, there is so much oil being pumped passed this seal that every little bit helps to prevent it from leaking again.
Dan.
