I have a 1992 Peugeot 405 GLDT, 228,000 miles OTC. It's probably coming to the end of it's productive life, but the engine is still strong, the suspension excellent. However, I have had a persistent water leak in the car, for a number of months, at first it was a slow leak- a bottle of Radweld in the radiator slowed things up a bit, but 3 bottles later, the leak is very bad where I have to fill the radiator every hour or so. The leak is located about seven inches north of the radiator bottle, under the engine, and the mechanic said that the leak was coming from a faulty water pump, and it needs to be replaced. He said that you would expect massive temp. drops in the engine because the water wasn't getting round (being pumped) the radiator (or something, what do I know!?). With no working water pump, the engine could seize up. However, the car warms to a 80 degrees centigrade, after a few mins and stays at a constant, except for warming to 90 degrees up steep hills. So something MUST be getting through? Now- my thinking is...what is going on? I know that if the job was to be done, we would also need a new cambelt- and all in, parts would cost around £40. But how labour intensive would the job be? I am only asking, becuase I want to find the right mechanic to do the job, or esle scrap the car and buy a new one. Thankyou for reading this.

First off I don't know this exact car at all as I know of none where I live but things would be similar. Sealer for coolant leaks are a patch job and when a little doesn't work the repair is indicated. The sealer becomes the problem and will plug everything up. For the belt - the cost of the parts will look cheap compared to the labor involved. There should be labor guides as to how much time it takes to do that job with normal tools and conditions expected. When bolts and things are corroded and things break doing any job the labor rate estimate goes out the window as those things can take longer than the whole job would have been.
