hi, i have a 1995 bonneville SSEi. When the car is in park the engine is sounds like someone is hitting the gas. All of my gauges are going up too. When im at a stop and my foots not on the break the car just "takes off". Also when im driving the car accelerates by itself too. You can feel the speed increase. Does anyone know what this is or what it could be? And how much it costs to fix?

Hi Lauren,
There are several things that might cause this but I'm going to back away and say get this to a good shop with the info you provided as it's too dangerous to fool with!! A dealer could be a best bet with this. This happened to another brand of cars years ago and I saw the pictures of cars through garages and all that and that company would't fess up for a while but did. Please come back and let us know what was found, T

I remember there were "cruise control" devices
available in the market in the 80's. My office
colleague fitted one in his Datsun Bluebird then.
He said all it did was kick in at the speed you
set it to, then you could keep your foot away
from the accelerator pedal while the device
kept the speed constant. It was essentially
nothing more than a lazy driver's foot assist.
A quick tap to the throttle pedal, and it
reverted to normal functioning.
He said a couple of times, the unit malfunctioned
when it kicked in at lower speeds which you
had not set it to, and it would immediately
accelerate the car to the higher preset speed.
This was obviously extremely dangerous and
my colleague took it out as soon as he could
after that.

Factory stuff has been very dependable or didn't work at all in my experience. Should shut down if you touch the brake pedal. T

PS: I owned a car - 1966 Thunderbird rare edition that had factory made cruise and brakes from the steering wheel.!! You could pass a car and slow down without use of your feet. The brake button was called "retard"
