abs light and brakes

95 chevy cavalier coupe..what happens is when i 1st start my car up and drive...anytime i turn the wheel and break at the same time the brakes dont grip properly...theres a scraping sound and just doesnt feel right.....but within a few mins when the wheel is straight my ABS light will come on...it stays on, and then my brakes are fine, no more scraping or anything.....any ideas?

Sounds like you have a bad wheel speed sensor. Whenever your ABS light comes on the antilock brakes are disabled and you have normal brakes. If it takes a little time for the light to turn on it's because the computer looks at the wheel speed from each sensor. If it sees a speed that isn't normal in one wheel compared to the rest it shuts the ABS system down and turns the light on. A trouble code is then stored in ABS computer. If your amber ABS light is on along with the red Brake light, then you have a power problem in the ABS system.
