That advise just cost you a ton! NEVER REMOVE A BATTERY CABLE WITH ENGINE RUNNING - NEVER!!!! Now just send it out both to fix the original problem and find out what damage that move just did, T

When you disconnect the battery with the engine running all that voltage coming out of the alternator has no battery to absorb it and it will spike every computer in the car. NEVER disconnect a battery with the engine running. That was OK 30 years ago when there were no computers in the cars. You need to have the battery tested first and then once you have a good battery, test the charging system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sorry to come on harsh but that trick ended with ''GENERATORS'' which will run without battery power. Everything is an alternator that I know of since the 1960s or so. They require battery power to be able to charge at all and will not on a 100% dead battery which most aren't. So it will struggle and seek power from whatever items in vehicle and can suck dry, maybe burn up main wire from battery to it and if newer you'd be out this whole car for the damage to computer controls which later this car and most Chryslers used for a voltage regulator. If you don't see any burn wire insulation or a horrid odor from the near certainly blown alternator now take them out and get each tested - free at many large chain parts outlets also wanting to sell you everything. You probably at least need both a new or good battery AND an alternator. This dang problem could have just been a loose belt and neither alternator or battery but a bit late now. Know that batteries can't keep going dead or they are seriously harmed even if a new one it kills them first time or takes life expectancy out a lot each subsequent time. Alternator if it can work with a low or real bad battery burns itself up trying to charge up from dead which none are intended to do. It's a 1990 which about now might be in you favor. You might find stuff used that's recently been replaced if you want to save a buck on this unless it's a real gem IMO that's old for this car without relentless care all along, T

You pay a shop to do it for you. You obviously don't have the knowledge or equipment to do this correctly.

There's no question the charging system isn't working now so no point in discussing testing it. IT ISN'T WORKING - I'M SURE! Now as I so verbosely said you need to find any and all damage done even for a 1990. It's not full of computer crap but still spikes can wipe out stuff. Delay items for lighting, intermittent wiper even are using "diodes" and assorted stuff all thru the vehicle if it was on especially could have been wrecked. You can total a car with what you did - no joke. What's worse is that trick is so old it not even funny anymore. Said that it did work and would tell you a generator was in fact working but they have been gone for about 50 freaking YEARS so who the heck even can remember that crap? While there's still a chance you are really lucky and only need a couple items don't mess with it anymore as it's demonstrated by doing this you shouldn't be touching it. No offense intended. As said the source problem could have been and still is a loose alternator belt now escalated to this mess, T
