belt tensioner? Sign In

Have a 93 ford temp.

Coming home last night, and i lost all my power steering, and my alt light went on. The car still starts and runs, but it makes a whining noise now.

I checked the belt and it does not spin on the pullys now. I can move it with my fingers if i press hard on it, and the pullys are moving as far as i can see.

The belt is in good condition. Its not oily. Was wondering if it is possibly too loose, or maybe too tight. Also could it be a belt tensioner? and would that just all of a sudden seize up?

If I read that right it does sound like the tensioner has quit tensioning the belt. Take the belt off which requires retracting the tensioner which should give you a spring loaded fight. It shouldn't move/slide without force. If it's gone bring the whole thing with you as some replacements may have the pulley separate from the bracket.

Pully if reusable should spin silently and no wobble. Take a hard look at the belt. Even if near new it could have been damaged by all this slipping, T
