Year of vehicle: 2002 Make of vehicle: Toyota Model of vehicle: Camry LE Engine size: 3.0 V6 Mileage: 134,000 It's a single lurch/jerk. for example, driving around 70 on the highway and turning off cruise control, that will make it jerk. Also, just having the car in neutral, pressing down on the accelerator and releasing it creates the jerk. It is not audible. I had the front and dogbone mounts replaced. They were in bad shape. I've taken it to 6 mechanics now. 5 of them say it feels like it's the mounts but the other two I didn't replace (on the sides) are fine. One mechanic (the dealership) says it's the remaining two mounts. There is no check engine light on. All 6 mechanics say they don't see anything wrong with the transmission but only one seems to be sure what it is. The other 5 also say they have no idea what it is but all say the dealership is wrong. I'm at a loss.

Usually you can have someone brake torque the engine with the transmission in reverse and in drive and see if mounts are broken. Sometimes you have to do this with the vehicle in the air cause rear mounts are hard to see. You can also jack up certain sides of the engine and or use pry bars to see if mounts are faulty. Someone has to know what is going on with the engine mounts. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

That brake, shift and torque test should show the problem as DS said and think Dealer may have done it properly. Mounts will show and just maybe in this is the exhaust pipe that isn't taking any motion too well making up for weak or wrecked mounts? Not real sure why you hade so many different suggestions from techs on this? Not sure what they were going to do exactly for $750 but seems like enough $$ IMO! T

They're just replacing two mounts for $750. It's OEM parts is why. It's fair labor I think, only about $200 for both mounts. Those motor mounts aren't cheap. Even aftermarket they're pretty pricey.

Just saw they were pricey aftermarket so dealer and list price would be up there. Some of this stuff the aftermarket upgrades over OEM and hard to know but it they failed makes you wonder. I just wonder why this is so hard to diagnose and also wonder what the heck this was exposed to that wrecked them and why all or both now left to do not just the bad one? To me 2 things wreck/break motor mounts. 1. Oil saturated from a leak bad enough to ruin the rubber or 2. Abuse at some point maybe not you. Whatever. At least for the cost and differing diagnosis this at least better be the problem! T

It was not the problem. They replaced them and it did not fix the issue at all. Now they are trying to sell me a new transmission. They told me in the beginning there was nothing wrong with my transmission. I don't know what to do now.

Well I'd bring that whole thing and bill up with them as it was their diagnosis. Worse when the old ones were in their hands it really should have been obviously a problem and stop there. If there's any question with transmission I'd seek out a transmission specialty shop. This multiple ideas on what it is and guessing all the time is getting old for you no doubt - there's better than that out there with a car and the problem witnessed by the tech, T

Sounds real fair from prior shop. I think you mean "valve body" not throttle body of a trans? I personally do NOT hear of that common to Toyotas? Any auto trans if never serviced and especially exposed to heat or harder use is an open book of maybe issues with transmissions and would sooner get codes for it and think about changing out fluid now which alone can either help if late or speed up any impending problems. These people have this in front of them and messing up. Web sites don't and naturally at a disadvantage. This could be an exhaust repair (pipes and more) that doesn't behave with even the slightest motion of the engine making all the symptoms of a bad motor mount? Something like that would escape most techs but only if something was just done recently aftermarket and common exhaust repair?? T

I vice gripped my phone and filmed my engine while I hold the brake down in drive and mashed the gas pedal. Does this engine movement seem normal? https://youtu.be/lYrwAHLlQyw

You'd really have to be looking at the mounts when that is being done but it doesn't look too excessive to me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

! No it's not normal to Vise grip a cell phone I get the idea. Engine moves too much at a glance tilting towards the back under load - see that? That's pulling so much is tugging on top radiator hose and thought you fixed that mount already? This is something to find out why and what moves too much? The reason I mention exhaust is just for crap like that, the only or last thing holding the engine from turning upside down under load is the exhaust pipe - it's also grounded and flexes for motion grounded for sensors. IDK - seems like a lot of people have looked at this and done stuff so question all of it about now. Wires not right from messing with mounts not really known if anyone could really check them or know if bad or not. They might be within limits and fine it did just look like it moved a bit much for me. You'll find if you do that test in reverse or opposite gear then you tested engine will tilt the other way. Other: Get a helper for that stuff not Vise grips and "mashing gas pedal" let someone do it with a clue while you watch from the sides in a safe area so you don't get run over if car takes off! T

I just don't see how a motor mount could cause your symptoms if it occurring as your revving the engine in neutral. If it was a mount issue, you would probably feel a thump when you had it brake torqued and let off the accelerator. In neutral there is no torque or enough of it to cause the motor to lift off a bad mount. Unless you had 500 horse power..lol Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
