car mystery…test your car repair know-how! Sign In

I have a 96 Altima that has run quite well up until recently. Suddenly I have multiple problems and I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. A few months ago my check engine light came on. The code dealt with a computer speed sensor problem. After about a month the check engine light went off and then came back on a week later but this time the code dealt with a third gear transmission problem. Which seemed odd because there was no apparent problem felt when driving. Then all of a sudden the car started stalling while I was driving. I had to shift into neutral to get it started. As I continued down the road the car begin to buck and stall until ultimately I had to restart it every few seconds. Luckily I was close to home and was able to get it into my driveway where it now sits because it will not start at all. Battery is fine but I'm not able to get any spark. Spark plugs are not fuel fouled and are producing no spark at all. Any ideas?

Those are the types of mysteries that we see too often in the shops. They aren't all the same though.

First order would be to have the ECU scanned to see what trouble codes are being stored. Write down the numbers.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
