car running sluggish Sign In

i have a 1993 pontiac grand am se 3.3 liter, i had a shop tune the car up, they put on new plug wires, plugs and air filter, the car still ran like crap with the check engine lite coming on every so often, i put in a new o-2 sensor, i took the car for a ride and it really ran bad, it was just chugging and trying to die, after really opening it up it was kinda back to running sluggish again, the real problem is that when im idle and hit the gas pedal the car chokes andd i have to feather the gas to get it going, its like its choking and wants to die,my brother in law thinks it may be the catalitic converter, im not sure what to do, should i have someone put it on a computer ? i would appreciate any help..........thanks Dennis, milwaukee, wi......ps i have 170,000 miles on it, otherwise it runs great

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem.
