I am buying a 2000 ford explorer sport 4.0 v6 184000 miles. I drove it today from their house to mine (1/2 mile) and when i turned in the driveway it died while still in drive. The car had been sitting two years, so i put gumout in it the tank, and used gumout spray to clean it out. Used a few shots of starting fluid and still cant get it to start. It cranks, and has spark and charge, and the fuel injector kicks on, but i can not get it to turn over. Any idea what else to do? I havent bought it yet, but it is stuck in my driveway now.

Do you have $$ into this yet or agreement to buy it? If not just contact owner and forget it. What I mean is if it isn't your I don't think you should be messing with it - seller should take care of whatever and the tow as needed. 1/2 mile and quits. I don't think we should even go on till knowing somehow it's YOUR responsibility to get it back at least. Also - it's been sitting for two years and unless some wild kind of careful storage it's going to be an initial problem and high chance of surprises. IMO this kind of this is seller's job or up front buyer beware and you seem to know so beware, T

agree with tom- you do NOT own it - have seller get it. And be done with it -

Ok. Ill be done with it. It is a coworkers car, so i was seeing if i could get it started. I already talked with him and he says if can get it started i can have it for $300. If not he will just tow it back. Figured i got it started once, might be able to do it again.

With that many mile it could have umped time and believe me, you don't want to attempt to change that timing chain. The first step should be a complete compression test. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

bigjayjay18 - The story deepens. If $300 was mentioned seems that's the price whether it runs or not? A co-worker -- it's your life but do you want to work with this person if when all goes wrong with this vehicle? Now it's in your driveway and I'd get it out (his problem or whatever it takes to get it out but the issue is on him/seller) UNLESS YOU ARE INTO FLIPPING THIS RIGHT OVER EVEN FOR SCRAP it should get you more than $300 but better it's out of your place first and do some homework. Does it even have papers to legally sell it? Sitting two years - why and if outdoors exposed to weather never touched there will be a long list of risks and known troubles now. Note: Brand new cars can't just sit for two years. Battery would be junk, tires, brakes rust in place, fuel gone bad to destructive, oils all fall/drain to bottom of sumps and wildly important parts unseen engine, gearcases can "lot rot" inside and about 1,000 more things. If you are well aware and capable of dealing with a host of problem or find out what a scrap yard will pay for it now including coming do get it (papers in order of course) or use it yourself for parts for another if your situation affords that go for it but even I would pass on this with the info you already provided consider it a scrap vehicle and does have value if just to recycle it for metal. Unless you are really into and ready for both mechanical and papers to even sell it off again (flip it) this isn't for you. Leave it to dealers of cars in any condition up to the scrap yards and get yourself something that runs and checks out well BEFORE you even talk about buying it. High risk situation is my gut feeling so I still say just move on and get it out of your place and be done with this, T
